Okay, so we thought we’d test a can of Scitec Nutrition’s Protein Delite protein powder, as we’ve heard lots of good things about the taste and frankly felt like something quite different from what we have been using lately. I always advice people to keep a few different brands of protein in their house at any one time so that they don’t have to drink the same old thing every day, as I’ve personally found that to be a smart and easy way of avoiding the staleness that come with a bodybuilder’s religious intake of protein drinks. Lately, however, I have been experimenting with eating less protein, and found myself stuck with a huge can of so so tasting protein powder (I won’t mention the brand) that I kind of wanted to finish off before I ordered anything new. I’m sick of it however, so when I walked past Tommi Thorvildsen‘s store here in Oslo the other day I thought I’d pop in for a chat (he’s often there taking care of business himself) and can of something, well, new and fresh. Out I walked with a can of Scitec Nutrition Protein Delite. And that’s the only protein powder I’ve been using ever since.
So what’s the verdict on this product? Well, let’s deal with the taste first: I’ve only tested this one (the raspberry yoghurt taste) but will probably give the other ones a go soon too. Because frankly, this is one of the absolutely best tasting protein powders I’ve ever had. To me, this stuff tastes like candy. Or, to be more precise as I’m really not that crazy about candy: it tastes better than candy. I mix it with skim milk and pretty much use enough of the stuff to turn my protein drink into something that does in fact resemble yoghurt – I’ve been doing that since I joined my first gym more than twenty years ago and watched the then scarily big competitive bodybuilders there do the same. And I love the taste of this stuff. It’s really very nice. Yes, I’d even go so far as to say it’s a bit of a… delight. Taste wise, this product easily gets a 5/5. Actually, make that a 6/5. l love the stuff.
Let’s take a look at the nutritional value, though: A typical serving of 30 grams (mine are bigger, but hey…) will give you approximately 112 calories, 19.5 grams of protein and 6.8 grams of carbohydrates and 0.75 grams of fat (which means that 6 of those 112 calories come from fat. Those numbers aren’t the most amazing we’ve ever seen, but they’re pretty good. You probably sacrifice some high protein content for the amazing taste, and 6.8 grams of carbs out of 30 really isn’t that bad. Besides, we’re not on the no-carb bandwagon anyway, so that’s fine with us.
What kind of protein are these people serving us with? Well, something they refer to as the ProDelite™ Proprietary Protein Matrix, which is a combination of whey protein concentrate, calcium caseinate and milk protein concentrate. So no whey protein isolate here. Okay, we can live with that, I guess, but there are protein powders on the market that offer protein of supposedly higher quality, and slightly more of it as well.
The product also contains pieces of dried fruit, maltodextrin, various flavors, guar gum, xanthan gum, aspartame, and coloring. We’re not crazy about the use of Aspartame and if you’re not a fan of this artificial sweetener you probably want to take a look elsewhere. We love the pieces of dried fruit, however.
So how do we feel about the nutritional value of the product overall? It’s pretty good, but not stellar. We’ll give it a 4/5.
With regards to price, that’s going to vary from where you get it from, of course. Generally, I feel that the price of this product is fine considering the great taste. Perhaps you do pay a little more for each gram of protein, but then the risk of not finishing off the can isn’t really that great either, so it’s probably not like it’s going to get thrown away like some of the other brands I’ve used before. In fact, I’m going to have to purchase more of this stuff very soon, as my can is almost empty.
Bottom line, then? This is a recommended product. It might not be what you want to use as your main protein powder, but something that you can use as somewhat of a treat here and there. For me, it’s rarely been easier to get my 1-3 protein drinks a day. I love this stuff – perhaps even a bit too much.
